Free Virus Protection for Your Computer
Viruses. They aren't very nice are they? Virus protection. It isn't cheap is it? Well I've never paid for a virus protection program, and i have never had a problem with viruses. Ever. This is because I do have virus protection programs on my computer; but they're free. Nope, I didn't download them illegally. The are all 100% legally free. I use my computer for banking, utorrent and other risky activities, so protection for me is vital. I often get my computer checked in a computer store just to be safe, and it has always be clean. In this article I shall describe the programs I use, how to use them, and their pros and cons.
AVG
This is a very diverse and useful antivirus program. It can be downloaded here: http://free.avg.com/ie-en/homepage It is an antivirus and anti-spyware program, that contains a complete computer scan system, a link scanner and an E-mail scanner. There is a free version and a version you can pay for, however I find the free version is more than adequate with dealing with those pesky viruses. The only con is that, while the antivirus side of things is great, its anti-spyware side of things is not as comprehensive. This is where another program comes in.
Super Anti-Spyware
I know what your thinking. With a name like Super Anti-Spyware its got to be a gimmick or a virus in disguise. Well nope, it isn't, its just a very very good program that was perhaps a little unoriginal with its name. Where AVG lacks in its anti-spyware department, this excels. The tagline for the program is "Remove ALL the Spyware, NOT just the easy ones!" It certainly does this. It has a full scan system that removes not just spyware, but a range of harmful threats. It can be downloaded here: http://www.superantispyware.com/ Once again, there is a free version and a version you pay for, but the free version does the job for me. It is constantly updating its database of threats and spyware. The only con I can think of is its cheesy name.
Windows Firewall
Ok, so there are mixed opinions about this firewall. Some people think it is inadequate, some people think it is sufficiently adequate. I think, combined with the two previous programs, it is more than adequate. There are better firewalls out there, but in my opinion, the windows firewall is the best free one. That would be the main con, that there are firewalls out there that are much better. However, I have never had a problem using this firewall.
Application of Programs
It is vital that you do scans regularly, at least every month, with AVG and Super Anti-Spyware. Make sure your windows firewall is on. With CCleaner, I would recommend you use it at once a week. With these programs you are sure to be safe. All without spending a penny. So there you have it, you can now fully protect your computer; for free. Enjoy using your computer, safe in the knowledge you won't be bothered by those pesky, evil viruses!
