The English Language Today

The English language today is one of the most widely spoken and written languages in the world today, with 380 million native speakers. It is the third most natively spoken language, after Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. One out of every six people in the world speak English. It is a beautiful language in its purest form, however, with so many dialogues and accents, a pure spoken English is hard to come by. Yet; it is these accents and different takes on this diverse language which make it so unique. It is indeed a language to be admired.

The language of English began in the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of England, and spread rapidly to what is now Scotland. Since then it has spread all over the world, and is recognised as one of the most important languages on the planet. However, the language is not completely safe. Aspects of it are under threat. In this age of technology we find ourselves in, the full uncompromised beauty of English is under threat from texting and internet messaging. It is not uncommon to find messages through these forms of communication in a diluted, vulgar form, for example, "how r u?" When the English language is such a diverse, rewarding language, why do we feel the need to ruin its beauty? Is it laziness, or just a plain lack of caring? Who knows? It is one of the main threats the English language faces today.

However, such a strong language will not be hindered by this.This language has survived centuries, and grown into the full formed personification of excellence it is today. There are many ambassadors for this language, with poets such as W.B Yeats, and writers such as J.R.R Tolkien. The amount of talent within this language is vast. The English language has survived many years; and it shall survive many many more.
